Review: The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion – Is it worth it?

Review: The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion – Is it worth it?

If you are looking for a potent ally against signs of aging and want to “upgrade” your skincare routine, The Ordinary’s Retinal 0.2% Emulsion is one of the most talked-about names right now. But beware: it’s not for amateurs.

Today, I’ll tell you about my transition from retinol to retinal, the mistake I made (and that you should avoid), and whether this product really delivers what it promises.

What is Retinal 0.2%?

Unlike regular retinol, Retinal (Retinaldehyde) is only one conversion step away from retinoic acid in the skin. This makes it significantly faster and more effective. The Ordinary’s version features a high concentration (0.2%) of encapsulated retinal, which helps with the delivery of the active ingredient but also demands respect.

My Experience: The mistake that almost cost me my skin barrier

I was already using retinol 3 times a week, so I thought the transition would be smooth. Big mistake.

I tried to keep the same frequency, and the result was a skin burn. Retinal is much stronger! I had to stop everything for a few weeks to recover my skin.

  • What saved me: I used a lot of Cicaplast and a Centella Asiatica cream, which were essential for calming the irritation and rebuilding the barrier.

My new strategy (The one that worked):

After recovering my skin, I started from scratch and with more caution:

  1. Reduced frequency: From 3 times (retinol) to just 2 times a week (retinal).
  2. Minimum amount: I use a tiny amount—pea-sized for the whole face. It feels like it won’t do anything, but believe me, it does.
  3. Tolerance: Now my skin accepts it well, and I feel the product is truly working on texture and firmness.

Packaging Information and How to Apply

According to the manufacturer’s instructions (see photos above):

  • When to use: At night only.
  • How to apply: Apply a pea-sized amount to a clean, dry face and neck.
  • Routine order: Use after water-based serums and before moisturizers.
  • Protection: Daily use of sunscreen is mandatory, as retinal makes the skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Pro-tip: Do not use in conjunction with other retinoid products.

Ingredient Analysis

The formula is very complete and designed to minimize irritation despite its potency:

  • Retinal (Retinaldehyde): The star ingredient for age support.
  • Bisabolol and Ginger Root Extract (Zingiber Officinale): Soothing ingredients to help the skin tolerate the active.
  • Ergothioneine: A powerful antioxidant.
  • Soothing Synthetics: Contains Cetylhydroxyproline Palmitamide, which helps the skin barrier.
  • Fragrance-free.

Verdict: Is it worth it?

Yes, I would definitely buy it again. The 15ml bottle might seem small, but since you use a minimal amount and only a few times a week, it lasts a long time. It is a high-value investment for those who have passed the beginner retinol phase and want more visible results.

My final advice: If you don’t have experience, start with a weaker retinol. Graduate to retinal only when your skin is resilient, and even then, start slow.
